Driver CPC Update |

The Driver Certificate in Professional Competence (Driver CPC) came into force on the 10th September 2008 for all PCV drivers (Category D and D1 licence holders) and on the 10th September 2009 for all LGV drivers (Cat. C and C1). The qualification has been introduced to raise the standards of the industry by ensuring that the professional driver is trained and knowledgeable in all the key areas of their role. Professional drivers are crucial to our economy, transporting people and goods within tight timeframes and in a safe and efficient way their vehicles littered with the latest technology and designed to be used by experts with a high level of proficiency. The 21st Century Driver therefore has to be skilled in all the techniques required to manoeuvre the vehicle in confined spaces as well as driving long distances on motorways, always alert to the threats of other vehicles who are less aware of the visibility constraints and other issues that may be evident in driving a large vehicle. The requirement for all existing drivers in the UK will be to complete 35 hours of training over a five year period. This means that from 10th September 09 for LGV drivers you will have 5 years to complete your hours and therefore acquire your CPC. There is no requirement to phase this over the five years and it isn't tested either but it will be advisable to ensure that it isn't left too late. Leaving it until September 2014 (deadline month/year) may cause problems if there is a shortage of instructors available and if after this date you don't hold the qualification then you cannot drive. The training needs to be approved by the Joint Approval Unit for Periodic Training (JAUPT) and meet the syllabus requirements. Note There are exemptions in the Directive for certain drivers that do not require a CPC and if you are unsure then contact the DSA for more guidance or e-mail us and we will be happy to advise you.
